Subject Description

    This subject provides an overview of the impact of diabetes and jurisdictional, national and international responses to the diabetes epidemic. Students will be introduced to the theory and processes of health promotion and health education in a range of settings. Principles of teaching and learning theory, motivational interviewing and behaviour change theory will be explored. The subject provides students with practical frameworks to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion programs and resource development. Introduction to service planning and management in a range of settings is explored. Principles of continuous quality improvement including consumer involvement in service design and review will be covered.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply appropriate behaviour change models and theories to the development of health promotion strategies to address diabetes
  • Describe the diabetes epidemic at a local, national and international level from a public health perspective
  • Identify primary health care prevention strategies relevant to a range of contexts and settings
  • Critically analyse professional practice and apply theories and principles of teaching and learning to facilitate diabetes education
  • Apply knowledge and skills in the process of planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion and education strategies relevant to diabetes
