Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to the process of effective communication while identifying the strengths and weaknesses in differing communication mediums. Students will be challenged to adopt new communication techniques and utilise health informatics systems to enhance interpersonal and professional communication skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss barriers to and facilitators of effective therapeutic and professional communication
  • Demonstrate effective written and interpersonal communication with individuals and groups
  • Identify the goals of effective communication for health professionals
  • Demonstrate the effective use of a variety of communication media and information systems in contemporary healthcare

Subject Assessment

  • Participation > Class participation - Individual
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Letter/memorandum - (20%) - Individual
  • 20% group video presentation; 20% individual reflection - (40%) - Group & Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled tutorials/specified online content; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.
