Subject Description

    This subject explores the history of globalisation with particular emphasis on the role of Asia. It examines the economic, cultural, political and ecological transformations that have increasingly interconnected peoples and places around the globe. Among key issues examined are: the role of Asia in the development of long-distance trade routes; the place of Asia in the first global economic system; revolutions; colonialism and war; the role of technology in globalisation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop a framework for understanding world history
  • Analyse the place of diverse regions in large scale networks in the past
  • apply skills in interpreting and assessing historical evidence
  • analyse and discuss the causes and consequences of connections between different societies and apply them to the Tropics

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (40%) - Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
