FS0405 - Physics

Credit points:03
Year:2023
Student Contribution Band:Band 4
Administered by:Academy Division

Subject Description

This subject is designed to help students acquire scientific knowledge and skills needed to be able to progress to undergraduate programs which have science as a pre-requisite. It is a requirement for those wishing to progress into engineering at university. FS0406 introduces students to the general principles and practical aspects of physics. Students will also learn to use laboratory equipment and learn to complete laboratory exercises. Using these skills and their knowledge of the theories and facts of physics, students will collect, analyse and communicate information collected from experiments

Learning Outcomes

  • recognise quantities, symbols and units in SI and convert them
  • use operations with vectors such as addition and subtraction of vectors
  • identify gravitational, electrical, magnetic and nuclear forces as vectors and explain what causes them
  • set up; undertake, and report on experiments under teacher supervision
  • demonstrate basic understanding of modern physics (Nuclear physics), and compare and contrast with classical physics
  • apply laws of physics such as Newton's Law, Conservation of momentum, conservation of energy, Coulomb's Law and Amper's Law to everyday situations

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (15%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 2 - (15%) - Individual
  • Written > Lab/Practical report - (20%) - Individual
