Subject Description

    The subject examines the physical characteristics, causes, impacts and management of various natural hazards, with a particular focus on the tropics. Major topics include: the relationship between climate change and natural hazards; coastal hazards; tropical cyclones; earthquakes; tsunamis; volcanoes; droughts; bushfires; floods; and landslides.

Learning Outcomes

  • identify and describe the physical characteristics, causes, impacts and management of various forms of natural hazards affecting human society
  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of natural hazard risk assessment and its role in hazard management
  • retrieve, analyse, synthesise and evaluate natural hazard information and data from a range of sources
  • convey ideas, arguments and conclusions clearly and coherently through well-developed written and oral communication skills

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Practicals and Field Report - (40%) - Individual
