Subject Description

    Children's Literature is a study of literature and media for children and youth from the eighteenth century to the present era. Through subject learning experiences this subject will introduce and inform students about the literary, industrial and institutional influences on children's literature over time. Topics addressed include fairy tales, animal stories, and colonial literature for children, children's films, realist and fantasy fiction for children and young adults.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate appropriate and competent use of literary-critical skills in essay-writing and classroom discussion
  • examine and competently discuss set texts and a range of other texts written for children by employing current approaches to the analysis of literature for children
  • gain a knowledge and understanding of the historic context of the development of the main genres of children's' and young adult literature including the literary, philosophical, and ideological backgrounds to these

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Participation > Online participation - (20%) - Individual
  • Draft outline 10% and Essay or Podcast/Video Essay/Recorded PowerPoint 40% - (50%) - Individual
