EG5210 - Risk Engineering and Systems Safety

Credit points:03
Year:2023
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

This subject focusses on how to apply risk management and risk engineering approaches to supporting safety creation and enhancement in socio-technical, engineered systems. Students will learn to anticipate potential accident scenarios in order to support risk treatment decision making. Systems safety concepts are embedded throughout, guiding the student to develop skills at integrating the many influences that affect safety performance.

Learning Outcomes

  • apply risk engineering concepts and techniques to anticipate realistic accident scenarios, for supporting subsequent decision making
  • apply optimization techniques to make a set of decisions to treat risk to as low as reasonably practicable
  • select and synthesise, with suitable justification, leading and lagging safety indicators to monitor risk and safety levels
  • effectively inform safety enhancement decision making using knowledge and comprehension of learnings from previous industrial accidents and near misses

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Technical report - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 2 - (10%) - Individual
