EE5510 - Advanced Electrical Engineering Design

Subject Description

Application of contemporary design methodologies to resolve complex problems in Electrical and Electronic Engineering; examination of case studies in success and failure of designs and design processes; consideration of the whole systems approach to design and the implications for engineering practice with an emphasis on renewable energy power distribution systems.

Learning Outcomes

• prioritise strategies for optimising performance in professional teams and identify roles in team-based approaches to design tasks
• identify and apply appropriate Australian and International standards in the design process, and justify design practices to industry needs and processes
• use a whole systems approach to design devices and systems in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
• analyse and discuss contemporary issues including ethics in the design of electrical and electronic systems and apply technical knowledge
• demonstrate professional competence in oral and written communication skills appropriate to the selected design examples and technical reports

Subject Assessment

• Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Group & Individual
• Written > Problem task - (20%) - Individual
• Written > Reflection/reflective task 1 - (20%) - Individual
• Written > Technical report - (40%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Students are required to demonstrate professionalism in the subject by timely submission of all assessable work and regular attendance at scheduled group activities and lectures where equivalent on-line materials have not been identified. Attendance will be monitored through feedback and assessment submissions, and unprofessional conduct will require additional assessment tasks are undertaken before a subject grade will be awarded. This policy is detailed in the subject outline.

Assumed Knowledge:  It is assumed that students will have adequate knowledge in basic electronics and power engineering theory and applications.
