ED5915 - Language and Literacy Education for Primary Teachers

Subject Description

This Phase One subject introduces the professional knowledge pertaining to the concepts of language and literacies required of primary school teachers. This comprises the content and pedagogical knowledge - as related to language and literacy - that teachers need to successfully engage with the demands of their profession in the contexts of the classroom and education more broadly. Graduate Student Teachers will develop an understanding of contemporary theories and practices about language and literacy education for children. Graduate Student Teachers are introduced to the Australian Curriculum, with focus directed to the 'place' of language and literacy within it; and the cross-curriculum literacy priority. The subject introduces concepts of language development and language use - with an emphasis on the ways in which language works in diverse social and cultural contexts. It provides an introduction to content and pedagogical knowledge required for the teaching and learning of reading/viewing, writing, speaking/listening in the context of the primary school. The subject provides an introduction to the organisational principles and practices which underpin literacy instruction across the curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

• identify, develop and demonstrate the language and literacy content knowledge and pedagogical skills required for teaching the ACARA curriculum (Years P-6) specific to teaching disciplines
• describe and explain key concepts of language and literacy development and learning, contemporary language and literacy curriculum frameworks and current approaches to language and literacy teaching
• apply knowledge of language and literacy concepts, frameworks and strategies to reflect and inform teaching, learning and interactions with diverse stakeholders in varied contexts
• use knowledge to build on a personal theory of language and literacy teaching and learning that will inform the future classroom praxis for the teacher and use this knowledge in motivating learners to build new knowledge's in age-appropriate ways and contexts

Special Assessment Requirements

The examination will be assessed against content knowledge and academic literacy. Academic Literacy will be a discriminating criterion and the attainment of a minimum score of 50% for the Professional and Academic Literacies criterion for Assessment Task 2 is required in order to Pass this subject overall. Achievement of an overall percentage of 50% or more for Assessment Task 2 is required in order to Pass this subject overall.
