ED5859 - Atypical Development

Available to Master of Guidance and Counselling, Master of Education and Graduate Certificate of Education students.

Subject Description

This subject draws on an understanding of typical human development in order to investigate atypical human development. The subject uses a combination of theories and case studies to develop advanced knowledge and understanding of complex issues specific to atypical development. This subject gives opportunities for areas of atypical development study that are personally relevant to professional contexts.

Learning Outcomes

• review, analyse and reflect on areas of skill strength and deficit with respect to professional practice and research principles in guidance and counselling, and career development applications
• communicate, evaluate and justify professional judgements and recommendations to specialist and non- specialist stakeholders using advanced reading, writing, listening and advocacy skills
• identify, theorise and design solutions to a range of atypical development issues, exercising expert judgement and professional collaboration
• describe normal patterns of human development in an ethical manner, consistent with Australian Counselling Association's Code of Ethics and the Singapore Association for Counselling Code of Ethics
• recognise and define a range of atypical behaviours relating to tropical, Indigenous, multicultural, rural and regional wellbeing, and their application to guidance and counselling, and career development

• Written > Learning plan - (40%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Role play - (25%) - Individual
