Subject Description

    In this subject pre-service teachers will integrate meaningful community-based service learning (minimum 50 hours) and reflection to enrich their understanding of their professional identity as HPE specialists. Pre-service teachers will extend their disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical skills to design, deliver and assess innovative learning experiences for diverse children/adolescents. They will integrate technology to assist with making judgements about outcome attainment. The underlying aim of engagement in service learning is to strengthen communities through provision of HPE-related programs which advance children's/adolescents' movement proficiencies as well as Australian Curriculum General Capabilities and Cross Curricular Priorities. Learning experiences are designed to support pre-service teachers' commitment to active citizenship moving forward in the communities in which they work.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically reflect on service learning and active citizenship to justify how community engagement enhances the status of the profession in presentation to colleagues
  • demonstrate professional engagement with colleagues and the community through provision of a service-learning project which exemplifies use of responsive and differentiated pedagogies catering for diverse learners in authentic contexts
  • evaluate how integration of technology assists with making judgements in HPE
  • justify HPE judgements to colleagues in moderation conversations
  • communicate coherent understanding of their professional identity as a Health and Physical Education specialist teacher in presentation to colleagues
