Subject Description

    This subject focuses on how to plan, implement and evaluate teaching, assessment, and feedback strategies, and interpret student data, with a view of facilitating successful student learning in the early years for the Australian Curriculum: English subject area and the Early Years Learning Framework (in particular, outcome five: children are effective communicators). Core content comprises the examination of current national and state curriculum documents and frameworks for children (birth to Year 3), the planning and implementing of reflective teaching and learning cycles, as well as interpreting student data to inform evidence-based practice in language, literature, literacy and communication for diverse learners. The subject aims to elaborate upon pre-service teachers' prior experiences in the Bachelor of Education program, and further develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions to be highly proficient teachers of the Australian Curriculum: English subject area, and the Early Years Learning Framework (in particular, Outcome Five: Children are effective communicators) to diverse learners in the early years.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to interpret student data to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice to ensure effective evidence-based practice in the English learning area
  • demonstrate a well-developed conceptual understanding of pedagogic principles and practices within contemporary frameworks (birth to Year 3) for the Australian Curriculum English learning area and the EYLF learning outcome number five (children are effective communicators)
  • demonstrate understanding of a range of strategies for providing timely, appropriate feedback to students and parents/carers about levels of achievement in the English learning area
  • demonstrate an understanding of the Early Years Learning Framework, National Quality Standard, National Quality Framework, and Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to a proficient level with attention to evidence to cause effective student learning
  • demonstrate understanding of, as well as confidence and skill in applying, a range of teaching, assessment and feedback strategies to cause effective student learning in the English learning area
