Subject Description

This subject prepares generalist teachers for their maths specialisation by examining the role of the specialist mathematics teacher in a primary context. Pre-service teachers will develop mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge ** to facilitate student learning. Pre-service teachers will develop and demonstrate thorough understandings of a range of mathematical pedagogies that support contemporary approaches to children's learning and use evidence gathered from students to inform pedagogical decision making through differentiated instruction. The subject will enhance pre-service teachers to progress their expertise in effective mathematics educational practices. This involves (1) critically reviewing mathematics education literature and the Australian Curriculum, (2) using student data to inform the planning of targeted teaching episodes, (3) refining practical skills pertaining to evidence based practice, and (4) reflecting on learning to identify implications for future teaching practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • collect, organise, interpret and moderate student assessment data to inform planning for targeted teaching and intervention
  • plan, present and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching episodes using a diverse repertoire of teaching strategies that promote dialogic learning and foreground the proficiency strands of the Australian Curriculum
  • communicate with peers, teachers and parents about the teaching and learning of mathematics and numeracy
  • synthesise authoritative research on the progression of student learning of the "big ideas" in mathematics, with reference to the Australian Curriculum and implications for teaching
  • assess and reflect upon learners' development of numerate practices and mathematical knowledge to inform future pedagogical decisions and differentiated instruction

Subject Assessment
