Subject Description

The subject examines current national and state curriculum frameworks and policies in mathematics education and contemporary approaches to teaching primary aged children in 21st-century classrooms. The subject develops preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics and embed positive dispositions towards numeracy to primary aged children from diverse backgrounds. Upon completion of this subject, preservice teachers will develop mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge and an appreciation of ICT tools to facilitate and showcase learning. Preservice teachers will develop and demonstrate an understanding of a range of mathematical pedagogies and assessment practices that are informed by research and support contemporary approaches to primary aged children's learning, especially the use of evidence gathered from students to inform pedagogical decision making through differentiated instruction. This subject includes 10 days of professional experience.
