Credit points:03
Year:2023
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Prerequisites:CS2002 OR CS5402
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

Overview of water resources systems planning and management; mathematical modelling of water resources systems for planning and management; basic modelling of surface and groundwater systems; water quality modelling; interpretation of results; modelling uncertainties and quantification quantifying reliability; modelling methods: simulation and optimization; classical and evolutionary optimization algorithms; application of artificial intelligence and meta models; application of probability and statistics; ensembles; fuzzy optimization; multiple criteria optimization and decisions models; Pareto optimal trade-offs and decision makers' utility functions; evaluation of optimal alternatives and economic values; advanced topics.

Learning Outcomes

  • define the complex interaction and integration of different components of water resources systems related to natural processes, economics, stakeholders, and environmental values
  • identify and assess risks and estimate reliability of predictions
  • apply modelling techniques and quantify ubiquitous uncertainties and interpretation of the outcomes
  • develop the ability to create, defining and select best solution from a suitable set of efficient alternatives solutions to water resources related engineering problems
  • analyse and quantify the trade-offs in multiple criteria decision and quantify the associated uncertainties
  • plan and manage water resources systems integrating surface water, groundwater, and water quality components

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
