Subject Description

    Important industrial fermentation and microbial processes; biochemical and molecular biological concepts reviewed; enzyme kinetics; microbial growth and fermentation kinetics; batch, fed-batch and continuous culture modelling; aeration and mass transfer; immobilised cell culture; operation, monitoring and control of fermentation systems; downstream processing; bioprocess design and economics.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge of fundamental biological concepts and explain the important biological processes occurring in biotechnology and environmental waste-treatment applications
  • recognise and apply fundamental kinetic models to fit experimental biological growth data
  • use design equations and kinetic models to determine important operational characteristics of bio-reactors
  • apply and develop fundamental stoichiometric models to characterise bio-reactions
  • employ research skills and techniques to investigate a bioprocess
