Subject Description

    The vast majority of tourist experiences and activities occur in tourism destination regions. The boundaries of tourism destinations are often political and can vary from national to local government areas. The core objective of tourism planning and management is to create and support a sustainable tourism destination. This subject focuses on the roles and activities of governments, development agencies and destination management organisations in the management of sustainable tourism destinations.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically evaluate the role and importance of destination management and marketing organisations in the sustainable development of competitive tourism destinations
  • analyse the process and challenges associated with the development of destination management plans and strategies
  • appraise the multidimensional nature of destination competitiveness
