BX3134 - Finance of International Trade

Subject Description

This subject is specifically shaped to provide a broad understanding of the relation between trade and finance, from both a macro and micro perspective. It draws on case studies from several regions including Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific. It covers the rationale for trade and investment, the role of the SDGs, trade agreements and international organisations such as the Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the World Trade Organisation. It also examines exchange risks faced by companies and trade financing. The study area of international markets is particularly relevant for keeping pace with changes in the financial landscape.

Learning Outcomes

• define and explain key concepts and theories of international trade and investment, and factors driving trade and investment in international markets
• appraise the importance of trade agreements, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and international organisations in foreign trade
• apply various techniques used for trade finance adopted by companies
• examine and develop hedging strategies for foreign exchange risks faced by companies involved in international trade
• critically interpret and evaluate the recording of international trade, e.g. balance of payments
