Subject Description

    This subject provides students with an introduction to management concepts and how they are applied to small and medium business in both urban and regional environments. The student will cover topics such as sustainability, changing environments, cultural differences, decision making, social responsibility, ethics, leadership, planning, delegation and empowerment, motivation and recruitment, all forming part of the suite topics to be explored. Practical emphasis is also placed on the fundamental management building blocks of: plan, organise, lead and control, which are critical to starting, growing and maintaining a successful business.

Learning Outcomes

  • examine key features of the four functions of management and apply in the context of organisational structures
  • plan, construct and discuss solutions relevant to business environments
  • apply ethical corporate and social responsibility concepts in achieving sustainable business practice

Special Assessment Requirements

Mandatory attendance requirements apply in this subject. A student who fails to attend at least 8 out of 10 Workshops must meet with the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching and provide evidence as to why they should be permitted to submit the final assessment task.
