Administered by:College of Public Health, Medical and Vet Sciences

Subject Description

This subject develops research project skills including project management and requires students to apply, consolidate and extend their discipline knowledge and skills to design and complete a biomedical research project in collaboration with other students. The project design will be determined by students in consultation with staff. The students will facilitate the research projects developed by small groups of undergraduate students by providing inter-team management, leadership and interpersonal communication skills in a professional context under academic staff supervision. Students will complete workplace orientated performance management plans and critically reflect on their performance and plans for improvement. Students will develop skills in constructing a research hypothesis, protocol design, experimental techniques, quality control, data collection and analysis. Students will present experimental results in an oral format and propose future experiments in the context of a grant proposal. Student will compile and showcase their discipline knowledge and skills in the format of a job application.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate employment readiness by showcasing discipline knowledge and skills in the preparation of a job application
  • Facilitate design and interaction of group research projects including methodology, statistical analysis, ethics, budgets and timelines and to complete experiments
  • Critically analyse and integrate team experimental results, with a critique of methods and outcomes, in the format of an oral presentation
  • Synthesise and formulate a grant proposal based on compiled and evaluated experimental outcomes
  • Demonstrate sound interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively in teams and between teams and the ability to critically reflect on current performance and implement improvement strategies

Subject Assessment

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (25%) - Group & Individual
  • Written Grant Application - (30%) - Individual
