AN2114 - Australia through Time and Place

Subject Description

This subject concerns the history, practice and findings of anthropological and archaeological research on Australia. Following a critical overview of the evidence of human colonisation and settlement of Australia and its cultural and linguistic diversity, the subject provides an integrated exploration of a number of key areas of research in anthropology and archaeology, including cosmology, ritual, ecology, economy and technology, trade and exchange, politics and governance, colonial encounters, material culture, art and performance, heritage, land rights and native title. Learning Outcomes

• review, synthesize and present anthropological and archaeological research on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social, economic and cultural life through time and place
• demonstrate critical insights into the complexity and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and cultural life in Australia at the threshold of colonisation
• analyse the contribution and relevance of anthropological and archaeological research for understanding contemporary social, economic and political issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians today
• assess the value of an interdisciplinary approach to a number of key areas of anthropological and archaeological research on Australia
