TV5130 - Animal Parasitology

Available to graduate students with a degree in Veterinary Science. Other appropriately trained graduates may enrol at the discretion of the Academic Head of Veterinary Science.

Subject Description

Review of the parasitic diseases important to veterinary medicine with a special emphasis on parasitic diseases common in tropical areas. Major groups of protozoan, helminth and arthropod parasites of domestic animals are examined with emphasis on diagnosis, epidemiology, control and treatment.

Learning Outcomes

• critically evaluate research papers and reviews on parasitological topics and present conclusions as seminars/reports
• develop plans for the management and control of parasitic diseases using integrated approaches
• apply modern technologies to diagnosis and treatment of parasitic diseases
• identify the common parasites of domestic animals and describe their biology
• describe the pathogenic mechanisms of parasitic diseases

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual
• Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Individual
• Written > Literature review - (30%) - Individual
