Subject Description

    This subject will allow students to develop a broad and critical conceptual understanding of the unique challenges posed by emerging public health threats. The subject will discuss current and emerging public health threats, the sociocultural, politico-economic and environmental challenges they present, and explore the ethical issues and social implications of different approaches to their management. Relevant international and national case studies will be used to promote an understanding of the infrastructure and inter-sectoral involvement required for the response to, management of, and recovery from these events.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe the types of public health threats that have emerged in the last decade and the potential impact these may have on both individual health and public health systems and infrastructure
  • critically appraise the concepts and drivers of emerging public health threats
  • explore the sociocultural, politico-economic and environmental challenges associated with the management of emerging public health emergencies
  • analyse the flexibility and adaptability as well as the inter-sectoral involvement required for the response to, management of, and recovery from emerging public health threats
