Subject Description

    This subject will prepare participants for international work in emergency response settings, particularly focused on displaced populations. Topics covered include: international humanitarian law, rapid assessment, organisation and coordination, basic epidemiology in emergency settings, disease control, vaccination, nutrition, reproductive health, water, sanitation & shelter and health and safety of the field worker. Guest lecturers with extensive field experience and technical expertise from a range of organisations contribute to this subject. This subject is suitable for both clinical and non-clinical participants.

Learning Outcomes

  • Articulate the major public health issues in an emergency setting
  • apply humanitarian principles in refugee settings
  • Discuss the organisation of health services and the multi-sectorial approach to reduce the health impact in emergency settings
  • Evaluate the public health situation in an emergency setting and propose appropriate responses
  • Approach an emergency refugee setting with insight into the challenges faced by humanitarian workers

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Group
  • Written > Brief - (50%) - Individual
