SP5205 - Clinical Exercise Physiology Management of Mental Health and Fatigue Disorders

Subject Description

This subject addresses the pathophysiological basis of mental health and fatigue disorders. This subject comprises a combination of online learning and compulsory on-campus (residential) activities. Students will explore environmental, behavioral, and clinical factors influencing participation in exercise across the lifespan, as well as the identification and management of exercise contraindications, and adverse signs and symptoms of mental health and fatigue disorders influencing exercise participation.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the pathophysiological and psychosocial basis, identification and diagnosis, treatment, and cognitive limitations and safety considerations associated with mental health and fatigue disorders
• Apply risk stratification, health-based screening, and effective communication strategies for people diagnosed with mental health disorders and for people diagnosed with fatigue disorders, to identify barriers to participation, contraindications, and/or risk to exercise
• Adapt exercise physiology interventions when working with children in clinical settings, including recognising and responding to ethical, moral, and legal responsibilities as allied health professionals
• Recognise psychosocial factors influencing participation, and identify contraindications of exercise
• Identify and respond to adverse situations in clinical exercise physiology, actioning onward referral where indicated

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in 100% of scheduled residential activities.
