SP5203 - Clinical Exercise Physiology Management of Metabolic Conditions and Kidney Disease

Subject Description

    This subject addresses the pathophysiological basis of metabolic conditions and kidney disease, as well as the assessment, diagnosis, and medical and lifestyle interventions associated with the treatment and prevention of metabolic conditions and kidney disease. This subject comprises a combination of online learning and compulsory on-campus (residential) activities. In this subject students will attain advanced knowledge and skills in facilitating and interpreting assessments and clinical exercise interventions for metabolic conditions and kidney disease. Students will also explore environmental and clinical factors influencing safety when facilitating exercise interventions, including the identification and management of exercise contraindications and adverse signs and symptoms of metabolic conditions and kidney disease, as well as risk factor stratification, and the effects of medications on exercise.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate advanced knowledge of the pathophysiological basis, identification and diagnosis, treatment, and functional limitations and safety considerations associated with metabolic conditions and kidney disease
  • apply risk stratification and health-based screening for metabolic conditions and kidney disease to identify contraindications and/or risk to exercise, and adapt exercise interventions based on available information
  • design, facilitate, and interpret exercise based assessments to identify cardiovascular and functional limitations, and determine safe capacity for exercise and/or lifestyle interventions for metabolic conditions and kidney disease
  • create and facilitate clinical exercise interventions for people diagnosed with metabolic conditions and for people diagnosed with kidney disease, as well as recognising contraindications to exercise, and identifying and responding to adverse reactions from exercise

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in 100% of scheduled residential activities.
