SP3018 - Advanced Biomechanics

Credit points:03
Year:2022
Student Contribution Band:Band 4
Prerequisites:SP2003 OR PH2023
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering (pre 2023 PCS)

Subject Description

This subject has a large focus on how biomechanical principles can be used to quantitatively examine dynamic movement. Students will learn how to compute joint reaction forces, net joint moments, and muscle power, and examine how these measures and can be used to prevent injury, improve movement patterns in different pathologies, and improve sporting performance. Quantifying the reaction forces and moments during gait are looked at in detail, and normative data for a number of populations are discussed and compared. Within practical classes, students will have the opportunity to collect three-dimensional motion capture data and will practice how to analyse and interpret the data they collect using skills learnt in lectures. Students will also learn about the role of anthropometry in ergonomics and sports performance, and will learn how to obtain body segment properties from anthropometric tables.

Learning Outcomes

  • define and apply complex concepts of mechanics applicable to the study of human movement
  • describe, calculate, and interpret the biomechanical aspects of gait patterns
  • measure biomechanical characteristics of sport and exercise activities using advanced biomechanical equipment
  • interpret data collected using advanced biomechanical equipment

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Examination - In class - (20%) - Individual
  • Workshop quizzes - (10%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (20%) - Individual
