SL2013 - Topics in Focus in Speech Pathology 1

Subject Description

This subject supports the development of foundation knowledge and skills for competent speech pathology practice in working with clients with voice disorders and clients across the lifespan who present with complex communication needs as a consequence of atypical cognitive, sensorimotor and/or anatomical development. These practice areas will be explored using a strengths-based approach within the broader context of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) and/or International Classification of Functioning - Children and Youth (ICF-CY). Approaches to speech pathology assessment and intervention will be critically evaluated with reference to current theories, frameworks, and principles of evidence-based practice.

Learning Outcomes

• evaluate the presentation of clients with complex communication needs with reference to the ICF and/or ICF-CY
• apply clinical reasoning to the planning and evaluation of speech pathology interventions for clients with complex communication needs
• evaluate the presentation of clients with voice differences or disorders including consideration of physiological, perceptual, acoustic and psychosocial aspects
• apply clinical reasoning to the planning and evaluation of speech pathology interventions for people with voice differences and disorders with reference to the ICF and/or ICF-CY

• Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - (40%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; pass every assessment item; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; attend all scheduled clinical placement hours; participate in at least 80% of all class activities.
