Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Bachelor of Speech Pathology (IHCAP) or Bachelor of Speech Pathology with Honours.

Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to speech pathology processes and competencies through a range of learning activities. Students will develop knowledge, skills, and professional attributes in lectures and tutorials and have opportunities to apply these within a clinical placement under supervision of a clinical educator. Across these activities there will be an emphasis on planning, administering, analysing, and reporting of speech pathology assessment with children who have speech, language, and/or other communication needs. Students will also explore hearing, hearing disorders, and the role of speech pathologists within intervention for children and adults with hearing disorders.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate novice level clinical competency and reasoning in planning, administering, and reporting speech pathology assessment procedures including case history interviewing
  • reflect on one's own clinical competency with reference to professional standards of speech pathology practice in Australia including client centered and evidence informed practices
  • explain the hearing process, disorders of hearing, and interventions for children and adults with hearing disorders
  • perform a hearing screening assessment and analyse and report associated findings

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; attend all scheduled clinical placement hours; participate in at least 80% all class activities.
