Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

Subject Description

    This subject will provide the foundation theoretical and professional skills necessary for competent practice in the assessment and treatment/management of language impairment in children and adolescents. This subject will also explore aetiological factors, models, and processes contributing to language differences and impairment. Implications across linguistic and cultural contexts, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, will be considered. Assessment and intervention methods will be explored with respect to current theories and evidence-based practice principles. The effects of language impairments on a child's activity and participation will be explored.

  • describe the factors that may contribute to language differences and impairment in children and adolescents
  • describe and justify appropriate child language assessment approaches
  • analyse and interpret child language assessment data and determine intervention goals, ensuring that all levels of the ICF are taken into account
  • formulate and justify intervention plans and approaches based in sound theoretical and evidence-based principles

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes.
