Subject Description

    This subject provides foundation knowledge about linguistics and phonology, upon which students will build for future clinical practice. This subject will explore the acquisition of speech sound systems including phonetics, phonology, prosody and morphology. Students will also learn about the transcription and analysis of the speech sound system. Australian linguistic diversity will also be explored with reference to Standard Australian English and Australian Aboriginal English.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe the acquisition of speech sound systems and apply these to Standard Australian English
  • describe the processes involved in the production of speech
  • describe the structural components of speech and language including phonetics, phonology, prosody and morphology
  • relate knowledge of linguistic differences to speech pathology practice
  • transcribe speech and analyse phonology, phonetics, prosody and morphology

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes.
