Subject Description

    Cognitive Psychology is the scientific study of mental processes such as attention, perception, memory, language, and problem solving. The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to the major topics, research, theories, and debates within the field, as well as the applications that research within the field have to everyday life and society. Special attention will be paid to human memory, as it underpins many mental processes. The tutorials will focus on developing the practical skills needed to design, conduct, and report research in this field.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge of the major topics, research and theories in Cognitive Psychology
  • critically appraise and evaluate classic and contemporary debates in Cognitive Psychology
  • identify the applications that psychological principles within Cognitive Psychology have to everyday life and society
  • design, conduct and report a piece of research on a Cognitive Psychology topic

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (35%) - Individual

  • Group project proposal 5%; group project research poster 20%; group project peer assessment 5% - (30%) - Group

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
