Subject Description

    This subject provides a general introduction to the theoretical and methodological foundations of psychological science and its applications. Drawing upon contemporary research, the subject will explore the 'how and why' behind mental processes and behaviour. Students will explore these issues in key sub-discipline areas of psychological science such as the nervous system, memory, cognition, lifespan development, cross-culture, psychological disorders and health. In order to gain a comprehensive appreciation of the content and methodology of psychology as a whole, students are strongly encouraged to also enrol in PY1102.

Learning Outcomes

  • Consolidate and synthesise knowledge of drivers of mental processes and human behaviour in core areas of psychology
  • Describe the key theories of the major sub-disciplines of psychological science, addressed in the subject
  • Critically appraise the scientific methodological process of psychology
  • Reflect upon the ways in which research findings in psychology might be applied to the understanding and solution of human problems in a manner that is reflexive, culturally appropriate and sensitive to the diversity of individuals including but not limited to, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
