PC3314 - Pharmacy Practice (Professional Honours) 2

Subject Description

This subject will further expand and deepen student understanding of pharmacy practice and counselling including legal/ethical issues, clinical dispensing, communication skills. Concepts of management of refugee health, cultural sensitivity, disaster management, occupational health, pharmacy management and pharmacist prescribing and their impact to practice will be incorporated. Drug stability, Pharmaceutical excipients and Return of unused medicines will be advanced and expanded. Students will gain an understanding of and the application of research statistics. Students will again undertake supervised experiential pharmacy placement in rural and urban, community and hospital settings. Students will continue to develop their research skills with guidance in the preparation of a research proposal and an ethics application for their research project.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate a deeper understanding of the dispensing functions of a pharmacist, particularly patient history taking, relating this to professional practice through experiential placement
• Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of pharmacy management
• Describe, interpret and apply accepted standards of practice, codes of ethics and the regulations and quality standards which govern the supply and use of medicines Australia when considering issues relating to the acquisition, storage, dispensing, sale and supply of pharmaceutical products and be able to provide evidence based information to patients on their use
• Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of research methods and statistics in undertaking an independent research project which includes critical analysis and synthesis of the literature to produce a research proposal and an ethics application

Assumed Knowledge:  As this is a core level 3 subject in the BPharm(Hons)/MPharm pathway, students will be expected to have completed all core level 1 and 2 subjects.
