NS3229 - Newborn Challenges and Midwifery Care

Subject Description

This subject builds on student's theoretical knowledge and clinical skills when caring for the newborn including infants who are experiencing complex care in the special care nursery. Students will gain experience working within a collaborative multidisciplinary healthcare team in the care of newborns and their families who face challenges including grief and loss.

Learning Outcomes

• explain the principles of support for the newborn requiring complex care
• develop strategies for the supportive care of the unwell neonate
• appraise evidence based practice to support the provision of family-centred newborn care within the multidisciplinary team
• apply NMBA (2018) Midwife standards for practice in the provision of midwifery care

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of on-campus tutorials; participate in all clinical skills classes; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; achieve a satisfactory grade for the portfolio, OSCE, medication calculations quiz, and PEP; achieve at least 50% for the examination. Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period.
