NS3228 - Midwifery Practice and Complex Care

Subject Description

This subject builds students' knowledge of physiological and pathophysiological processes to meet the needs of women requiring complex care due to complications of pregnancy and/or pre-existing medical conditions. Students will examine the assessment, planning and evaluation of midwifery care that meets the needs of women within a multidisciplinary team.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiological processes that may impact on the pregnancy, birth and postnatal continuum
• appraise the use of available health technology to support midwifery care in a complex care environment
• apply the NMBA (2018) Midwife standards for practice in promoting woman-centred culturally safe care when complex collaborative management is required
• evaluate evidence-based practice in the provision of care for women with complex needs

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
• Participation > Class participation - Individual
• Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (30%) - Individual
• Recruit 2 women for Continuity of Care Experiences; must pass hurdle assessment - Individual
• Written > Workbook - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled on-campus tutorial classes; achieve a satisfactory grade for the K2 modules; achieve at least 50% for the examination; recruit 2 women as CCE; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties. Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period.
