NS2015 - Law and Ethics for Nursing and Midwifery

Subject Description

    This subject introduces the student to the key legal and ethical obligations of Nurses and Midwives.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge of the main features of the ethical traditions influencing nursing and midwifery
  • critically evaluate clinical practice with reference to ethical principles
  • identify the main provisions of codes of ethics that govern the practice of nursing and midwifery in Australia
  • outline the Australian legal system and the role of each part
  • demonstrate knowledge of the law as it applies to nursing and midwifery in Australia in general, and Queensland in particular

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Participation > Class participation - Individual
  • Written > Case study analysis - (40%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled on-campus tutorial classes/online collaboration sessions; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties. Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period - refer to NM Year Planner.
