Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to the application of the principles of person centred care. Skills in assisting with activities of daily living to maintain patient independence are developed. The techniques of physical and mental health assessment are practiced in a simulated setting.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate techniques used to assess physical and mental health
  • describe the precautions necessary to maintain a safe environment for the patient, the nurse and colleagues
  • demonstrate proficiency in the performance of essential nursing skills
  • outline the principles of person centred care and its application across the lifespan
  • apply the Registered Nurse standards for practice in the provision of evidence-based nursing care in a simulated environment

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (60%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (40%) - Group
  • Participation > Class participation - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Portfolio - Individual
  • Role-play and peer assessment of clinical skills in simulated environment and written reflection; must pass hurdle assessment - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled tutorial classes/specified online content; participate in all scheduled clinical skills classes; achieve a sat/pass grade for the portfolio, exam and clinical skills assessment tasks; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties. Exams may be scheduled outside regular university exam period, refer to NM Year Planner.
