MO1026 - Alcohol and Drug Services

Subject Description

This subject supports skill and knowledge development of the rural generalist in designing and developing assessments and interventions for consumers with Alcohol and Other Drug use issues and their significant others. Students will gain an overview of theories and models that have formed current thinking on Alcohol and Other Drug use in Australia before considering the use, harm, treatment and challenges and benefits, of Alcohol and Other Drugs in the rural and remote context. Students will extend their knowledge of substances, interventions to reduce harm, screen and assess and intensive intervention, with a focus on psychosocial interventions. Primary concepts relating to health behaviour change, are also considered in meeting the challenges of working with consumers with Alcohol and Other Drug use issues in this environment. This module has been developed specifically for allied health professionals in the following professions: Occupational Therapy; Psychology; Social Work. Participants are responsible for ensuring they are practicing in accordance with the regulatory instruments of their specific allied health profession, within their own personal scope of practice and experience level and in accordance with the policies of their employer. This module requires access to a patient or consumer you are currently working with, who is concerned about their substance use or identified by yourself as having, or been referred to your service for, substance use issues.
