MI3061 - Advanced Immunobiology

Subject Description

This subject builds on the principles and concepts regarding the function of the immune system introduced in second year in the subjects MI2011:03 (Microbial Diversity) and MI2021:03 (Microbiology and Immunology). Advanced Immunobiology aims to cover the biological and functional aspects of the immune system and its complex interaction with other physiological systems. It is an integrated subject providing students with an understanding of the evolution of the immune system, immunophysiology, regulation of the immune system, the potential to manipulate the immune system and the role of the immune system in infectious diseases, immunopathology and in the development of tumours.

Learning Outcomes

• Explain and discuss key immunological principles and terminology
• Apply reasoning to understanding disease states and their immunological cause
• Discuss the concepts of immunomanipulation and transplantation
• Perform and interpret basic immunological assays
• Demonstrate the ability to conduct and analyse results from experiments and to communicate findings in a written form
• Apply basic statistical methods to the gathering and analysis of immunological data
• Identify, read, critically appraise, assimilate and communicate relevant scientific literature
• Interpret and communicate experimental data on research in immunology
• Design experiments to answer immunology research questions
• Work effectively in small groups to complete practical tasks in immunology

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (60%) - Individual
• Oral > Presentation 1 - (10%) - Group
• Written > Literature review - (10%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (20%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more; Achieve at least 50% for on-course assessment and at least 50% on the final examination. On-course assessment components includes practical reports, assignment, tutorial oral presentation.
