Subject Description

    This subject introduces descriptive approaches to the analysis of speech sounds, especially those of English and the languages spoken near Australia and the Pacific region, including Tok Pisin, Indonesian, French, and Chinese. The focus is on sound production, correct use of the International Phonetic Alphabet, and the basics of acoustic phonetics. Special focus is made on the use of phonetic transcription for language learning and language teaching purposes.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge of the sound system of English, including Australian English and other varieties
  • demonstrate understanding of articulatory phonetics
  • utilise knowledge of vocal tract anatomy by means of correct use of the International Phonetic Alphabet
  • apply phonetic concepts to articulate non-English sounds in several languages spoken near Australia and the Pacific region

  • Participation > Class participation - (20%) - Individual
