Subject Description

    This subject introduces Tok Pisin, an official language of Papua New Guinea and the most widely used language in the country. No prior knowledge of the language is presumed. Students will develop the ability to understand and speak Tok Pisin at an elementary level with basic grammatical structures as well as fundamental competence in reading and writing the language. Students will be exposed to Melanesian culture as it relates to this language, especially kinship, traditional practices, terms for unique foods, flora, and fauna. Special emphasis is placed on learning linguistic structures most needed by fieldworkers and healthcare workers.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate elementary listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Tok Pisin
  • utilise elementary structures and particular grammatical functions of Tok Pisin
  • practice communicating in Tok Posin in speaking and writing on selected topics of daily living
  • consider the sociocultural dimensions of Tok Pisin use

  • Participation > Class participation - (20%) - Individual
