Subject Description

    Students will be provided with a broad overview of the basic principles, institutions and language of international law and its interaction with international politics and economics. Each semester students will be taught a core syllabus and a selection from the more specialised topic list. To encourage students to critically assess the international legal implications of current events and Australian foreign policy, the case studies and examples given to demonstrate the application of international law will be focussed on the Pacific and the Southeast Asian region.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe some of the theories and concepts that underpin Public International Law and explain how those theories and concepts are given effect
  • Critically analyse Public International Law both in terms of its content and it application
  • Describe and critically analyse specific area of Public International Law
  • Conduct advanced legal research
  • Convey legal argument accurately and effectively in both written and oral form appropriate to the relevant context

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (40%) - Individual
