HS2406 - Health Promotion in Dentistry

Subject Description

This subject introduces students to the principles of health promotion in the context of dentistry. Students will analyse the social determinants of health that impact oral health, and explore barriers to behaviour change at an individual and population level. Students will examine frameworks and models that can be used to address oral health issues and will gain experience applying these frameworks through a primary school visit practicum.

Learning Outcomes

• Analyse the principles of health promotion outlined in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion
• Critically reflect upon the social determinants of health and identify applicability to dentistry
• Explore barriers to behaviour change and apply behaviour change models to selected health issues
• Examine individual, group and population strategies and methods in health promotion and their application to dentistry
• Plan, implement and evaluate oral health education strategies as part of a primary school visit practicum

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (30%) - Individual
• Plan - (20%) - Group

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more, from the combined graded assessments within the subject. Complete 10 hours of school placement in a professional manner including all placement related lectures and workshops
