Subject Description

    The subject introduces students to the concept of lifespan development. Physical, cognitive and psychosocial development are examined in relation to major theorists and stages of human development from birth through to death. Socio-cultural aspects in relation to multi-culturalism and health and well-being are explored. Major topics will include: biological beginnings, infancy, early childhood, middle and late childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle and late adulthood, and end-of-life.

Learning Outcomes

  • examine and apply key theories regarding physical, cognitive and psychosocial development throughout the lifespan
  • describe the major developmental periods and transitions from conception to death and examine the relevance of these to health professional practice
  • compare and contrast different health professional roles in relation to their key functions when working with individuals at various stages across the lifespan

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; achieve at least 50% across the written assignment and in-class examination; participate in at least 80% of scheduled tutorials.
