Subject Description

    This subject examines the way in which European and other explorers have engaged with the environments and peoples of the Australian continent and the wider Pacific. It raises questions about the nature of European exploration, its physical and intellectual underpinnings, and its consequences.

Learning Outcomes

  • display broad knowledge and apply skills in the reading and interpretation of historical evidence
  • identify biases and assumptions in interpretations of the relevant literature, both primary and secondary
  • evaluate the relationships between exploration, colonisation, and change within diverse Indigenous cultures
  • apply advanced skills in historical research, writing, critical thinking and problem solving

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (45%) - Group
  • Written > Critical appraisal/review - (30%) - Group
  • Performance-website development/creation 15% Oral presentation 10% - (25%) - Group
