Subject Description

    This subject provides engagement with processes and methods of social research, and particularly the types of research questions and environments that researchers are likely to encounter in development work. Students will be guided through the four key stages of research - formulating research Questions, gathering data, analysing data, and writing up - in order to design their own research project. Attention will be given to research ethics, working across cultures, researcher positionality, and the politics and power dynamics of conducting research with and within local communities. The primary emphasis of the subject is on qualitative research methods and methodologies.

Learning Outcomes

  • explore and compare the formulation of research questions in the social sciences and in development
  • design a small-scale research project and be able to contribute to the design of major projects
  • demonstrate an understanding of a range of qualitative data-collection methods used in the social sciences and in development work, including practical and critical issues in the use of these methods
  • critically examine strategic issues in planning research in culturally diverse contexts
  • explore a range of ethical issues relevant to social research
