Subject Description

    This subject focuses on techniques of site survey, urban analysis and design, and reviews the significance of context. The main objective is to develop skills related to the description, evaluation and analysis of urban spaces, and the application of this understanding to a range of design scales (from masterplan to site design). The studio lays the foundations for the development of design responses that are effective and appropriate to their setting, providing an essential base from which students can progress to urban planning and design practice upon completing their degrees.

Learning Outcomes

  • undertake site analysis, planning and design at a range of scales
  • develop a design process that enables the achievement of project requirements
  • research, analyse and interpret the implications of biophysical, economic, social and cultural characteristics and values for urban design within a design framework
  • consider concepts of site design theory, including spatial experience, cultural requirements and place meaning
  • relate three dimensional technical data to site understanding
  • communicate analytical and design ideas, graphically and in writing
