Subject Description

    The subject examines the physical characteristics, causes, impacts and management of various natural hazards, with a particular focus on the tropics. Major topics include: the relationship between climate change and natural hazards; coastal hazards; tropical cyclones; earthquakes; tsunamis; volcanoes; droughts; bushfires; floods; and landslides.

Learning Outcomes

  • identify, describe, and critically evaluate the physical characteristics, causes, impacts and management of various forms of natural hazards affecting human society
  • apply the principles of natural hazard risk assessment to critically appraise a real-world natural hazard problem and its management.
  • retrieve, analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate natural hazard information and data from a range of sources
  • convey ideas, arguments and conclusions clearly and coherently through well-developed written and oral communication skills

Subject Assessment

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Practicals and Field Report - (30%) - Individual
