Subject Description

    The aim of this subject is to prepare the students to work at a high level in industry with automation and control systems and to give students extensive hands on practice of implementing the automation, control and monitoring of industrial processes and fault-finding. To provide a laboratory programme that is closely linked to the lectures and which emphasises the main learning objectives of the course through assignments and mini projects.

Learning Outcomes

  • verify automation / control systems using good design practice
  • design, install and maintain automation and control systems
  • work at a high level in industry with automation and control systems
  • employ high-level PLC control systems in the computer integration of a manufacturing process
  • evaluate methods of data handling and conversion
  • implement the skills required for automation, control and monitoring of industrial processes
  • implement industrial processes including discrete manufacturing, control of sequences, batch processing, and process control
  • implement computer integrated manufacturing (C.I.M.) and flexible manufacturing systems (F.M.S.)

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Problem task - (25%) - Group
  • Practical assessment 20% Class participation 5% - (25%) - Individual
